U.S. consumers spent $15.6 billion on dietary supplements in 2006, well ahead of the total in any other country, according to data from Euro Monitor, Information Resources Inc. and other sources, said Peter Zambetti, global business development manager for dietary supplements at Pfizer's Capsugel division. However, the Asia Pacific market overall outpaced North America on consumer spending in 2006 - accounting for 44.4% of retail sales compared to 32.2%. Western Europe was third with 14.4% of the retail sales, followed by Latin America (3.1%), Eastern Europe (2.7%) and other regions (3%), Zambetti said.
