Trans fat disclosure study proposed
FDA submits for Office of Management & Budget review a proposed experimental study to evaluate whether trans-fat disclosures will help consumers choose healthier foods. The proposal follows a July 2003 advance notice of proposed rulemaking requesting comments about possible fatty-acids disclosure requirements to accompany nutrient content claims. FDA says the study will evaluate how such disclosure requirements would sway consumers' choices, with the results providing empirical support for possible policy decisions about requiring disclosures and determining how the information would be formatted on packages. "Experimental manipulation of labels...makes it possible to estimate the effects of various possible disclosure requirements while controlling for individual differences," the agency says.
