Quaker Oats has dropped certain health claims made on packaging and in advertising for Quaker oatmeal products in response to the threat of litigation by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the watchdog group announces April 17. Claims that stated oatmeal is a "unique" whole grain food that "actively finds" cholesterol and removes it from the body were challenged by CSPI, as well as packaging that the group said "greatly exaggerated" the cholesterol-lowering potential of oatmeal. New copy on packaging and in advertising states: "as part of a healthy diet, the soluble fiber in oatmeal helps remove cholesterol" and "three grams of soluble fiber daily from oatmeal may help reduce heart disease risk as part of a heart-healthy diet."
