Vitamin D and weight loss: Consuming calcium and vitamin D while on a weight-loss program results in greater drops in LDL-cholesterol in overweight or obese women with low calcium intake, according to a study in the January American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Genevieve C. Major, Division of Kinesiology, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Laval University, Ste-Foy, Canada, et al., enrolled 63 women with a body mass index of more than 30 on a 15-week low-calorie diet with an average 700 mg calcium intake. The women were given daily tablets of either 1,200 mg calcium with vitamin D or placebo. The results also suggest calcium and vitamin D supplementation might lower cardiovascular risk in women with low calcium intake, the authors conclude.
