PepsiCo gets Naked

Executive Summary

The soft-drink giant continues adding brands targeted for health-conscious consumers with the acquisition of Naked Juice Company, which says it has achieved annual sales of more than $150 mil. primarily through grassroots marketing and sales efforts. Azusa, Calif.-based Naked, which was controlled by North Castle Partners private equity firm, produces more than 25 juice and juice-smoothie Naked selections made from fruits and nutritional boosts and without sugars or preservatives. The deal, with terms not disclosed, comes the same month PepsiCo launched Fuelosophy, a milk-based product with vitamins A, B, C, D and E that is being sold in test markets including some Whole Foods stores (1"The Tan Sheet" Nov. 20, 2006, In Brief). PepsiCo says nearly all of Naked's beverages qualify for the "Smart Spot designation" it has made for its more than 250 "products that contribute to a healthier lifestyle."...

North Castle sells Enzymatic Therapy to Nature’s Way

Springville, Utah-based herbal and natural product manufacturer Nature's Way acquires natural medicine and supplement firm Enzymatic Therapy under an Oct. 9 agreement with the North Castle Partners private equity firm, Enzymatic Therapy's majority shareholder. Green Bay, Wis.-based Enzymatic Therapy says Oct. 17 that all other shareholders approved the sale, which will close pending regulatory approvals. North Castle also was the majority investor in Naked Juice when PepsiCo acquired it in 2007 (1"The Tan Sheet" Nov. 27, 2007, In Brief). PepsiCo gets more “Water”

PepsiCo acquires V Water, a vitamin water brand launched in the U.K. in 2005 with six flavors. V Water, with ingredients including vitamin C, zinc, selenium and ginseng, provides PepsiCo "with a strong platform for expansion into a fast growing market, and reflects PepsiCo's global commitment to ... extending our range of healthier beverages," the firm says in an April 30 release. PepsiCo reached an exclusive bottling agreement with Britvic plc to manufacture, sell and distribute the V Water products in Great Britain.
