A list of 15 voluntary "Guiding Principles" on direct-to-consumer advertising emphasize consumer education and "exceed current FDA regulations in many ways," the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America announces Aug. 2. PhRMA collaborated on the new guidelines for industry self-regulation with 23 pharmaceutical firms. DTC print and TV ads should "include information about the availability of other options such as diet and lifestyle," according to one of the new guidelines. PhRMA will establish an "Office of Accountability" to receive comments from consumer and healthcare professionals about DTC ads. The comments will periodically be made public and reports will be sent to FDA. PhRMA also compels companies to submit DTC television ads to FDA prior to broadcasting...
