Executive Summary

A bill that would require California's Department of Health Services to create a list of performance-enhancing supplements banned from interscholastic use passed the State Senate in a 31-6 vote May 31. Introduced by Sen. Jackie Speier (D), the bill (SB 37) also contains a provision for high school coaches to complete an educational course on the dangers of using steroids and performance-enhancing dietary supplements. The legislation will need to pass through the Assembly's Policy and Finance committees and the Assembly floor before reaching Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R).
