Executive Summary

"Dietary combinations may not differ in potency from first-generation statins in achieving current lipid goals for primary prevention," David Jenkins, St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, et al., conclude following a recent trial. Researchers placed 34 patients on three one-month regimens divided by washout periods: a very-low-unsaturated-fat diet (control diet), the control diet plus 20 mg lovastatin (statin diet); and a diet high in plant sterols and viscous fibers (portfolio diet). While LDL cholesterol decreased with the statin and portfolio diets, "nine participants showed a better response to the portfolio diet than to the statin diet," the authors report in the February American Journal of Clinical Nutrition...
