Executive Summary
Elderly patients supplemented with DHEA for six months had significant decreases in visceral and subcutaneous fat, suggesting that "DHEA replacement may partially reverse the aging-related accumulation of abdominal fat in elderly people," a study published in the Nov. 10 JAMA found. Fifty-three participants ages 65 to 78 were randomly assigned to 50 mg DHEA or placebo. The findings "raise the possibility that long-term DHEA replacement therapy might reduce the accumulation of abdominal fat and protect against development of the metabolic/insulin resistance syndrome."
