Executive Summary

Vertically integrated firm to purchase De Tuinen Dutch health food store chain from Royal Ahold for about $16.6 mil., NBTY announces Dec. 11. In deal expected to close first quarter of 2003, NBTY will acquire 44 company-owned De Tuinen stores and 21 franchised outlets located throughout the Netherlands. De Tuinen, which means "the garden" in Dutch, sells OTCs, dietary supplements and beauty care items; the chain has total annual revenue of roughly $30.2 mil., NBTY says. Royal Ahold, an international food retail service, noted NBTY is retaining De Tuinen's 350 employees. Acquisition extends NBTY's European presence, which currently consists of its Holland & Barrett chain in the UK, Ireland.
