Executive Summary

Ephedra product variability: Analysis of 50 marketed ephedra supplements revealed "large variations" in recommended and maximum dosing, John Baker, Center for Addiction & Alternative Medicine Research, Minneapolis, et al., report. Recommended doses ranged from 12 mg-75 mg/day and dose limits ranged from 24 mg/day for seven days to 100 mg/day for 12 weeks. However, supplements "appear to exhibit improved quality control" compared to past reviews, researchers state. Baker et al. examined variability within and among supplements and compared label claims. Data showed most products fell within 25% of labeled content and no supplements purporting to be ephedrine-free contained ephedra alkaloids.
