BSE bill

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

Senate unanimously passes "Animal Disease Risk Assessment, Prevention & Control Act" April 5. Bill would establish interagency task force to coordinate efforts to prevent BSE outbreak. S 700, originally introduced as S 534, was amended April 5 by Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) to require USDA, in consultation with other federal agencies, submit preliminary report to Congress on "interagency activities to assess, prevent and control the spread of BSE." Report also would evaluate economic impact and potential risk to public, and provide recommendations for legislation that will improve efforts to control disease transmission. Bill now moves to House for consideration
