Executive Summary
Assembly Bill 4934 would require applicable animal-derived products to state: "Warning: This product contains rendered or emulsified material and bone meal which may be harmful to your health." Introduced by Margaret Market (D), the measure comes amidst European BSE scare. Federal legislators have taken the issue up as well: Sen. Benjamin Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) introduced the Mad Cow Prevention Act March 14. The bill, S 534, would establish an interagency task force charged with evaluating ongoing activities to contain the disease as well as making recommendations "for legislative and regulatory actions that should be taken to prevent the outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy." FDA Acting Commissioner Bernard Schwetz, PhD, was questioned by the House Appropriations/Agriculture Subcommittee on March 8 about domestic "mad cow disease" risks (1"The Tan Sheet" March 12, p. 9)
