Medicare and smoking cessation

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

Pilot study to determine most effective smoking cessation method among seniors will kick off in November, the Health Care Financing Administration says Oct. 13. Demonstration project, beginning initially in Alabama, Florida, Missouri and Ohio, will look at various combos of OTCs (such as SmithKline's Nicorette gum and NicoDerm CQ transdermal patch), Rx nicotine replacements (GlaxoWellcome's Zyban) and counseling. Such programs do not fall under Medicare, but "if the demonstration proves successful in identifying the most effective ways to helps seniors stop smoking, this could prompt Congress to consider a Medicare benefit," HCFA says. Comments are due by Oct. 31
