Softgels and rapid-dissolving tablets firm acquires manufacturing center and rights to two topical drug delivery technologies from Redwood City, Calif.-based Advanced Polymer Systems, the companies announce June 23. Scherer will pay $25 mil. initially and up to an additional $26.5 mil. in milestone payments over three years. The patented Microsponge and Polytrap technologies use biologically inert microscopic polymers which, when blended into creams, gels, liquids or powders and applied to the skin, steadily release medication over time. Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Scherer will use the technologies to produce topical Rx, OTC and personal care products for pharmaceutical and cosmetic firms
