Expanding health plan drug coverage to include OTCs may merit consideration as a means to restrain growth in pharmacy budgets, Ford Healthcare Management Director Woodrow Myers, MD, suggests at a conference on access to pharmaceuticals in Princeton, N.J. May 12. Myers raised the possibility of covering OTCs in the context of Ford's spending on the proton pump inhibitor Prilosec; the automaker spent $17 mil. on the AstraZeneca drug in 1999, up 31% from the prior year. Health plan coverage for OTCs might counteract the consumer perception that "if you don't have to go behind the counter to get it, it is not a good thing," Myers says
