Executive Summary
Draft guidelines for American Dental Association acceptance of products used to manage oral malodor, released in February, advises companies on the protocol for submitting data. Clinical studies to assess the effectiveness of oral products, including toothpaste, mouthwash, breath mints and gum, must include organoleptic exams, gas chromatography to detect volatile compounds and other instruments to measure oral malodor. Safety trials include microbial assessment, oral soft tissue testing and soft tissue irritation. A plaque assessment also should be conducted. Other ADA acceptance program categories include products to combat plaque and gingivitis and home-use tooth whitening products
