Executive Summary

Administration of 300 mg/day androstenedione raises serum testosterone concentrations 34%, Benjamin Leder, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital, et al., report in the Feb. 9 JAMA. The trial randomized 42 healthy men ages 20-40 with no prior andro or steroid use and no experience bodybuilding to receive 100 mg/d, 300 mg/d or no andro for one week. Along with the testosterone increase, serum estradiol concentrations rose 128% in the 300 mg/d group. The supplement gained widespread fame after baseball slugger Mark McGwire admitted to using it in 1998. Major League Baseball, which partly funded the trial, commended the study but said "more research is needed." In a June 2 JAMA study, Iowa State University researchers reported andro did not increase serum testosterone levels (1"The Tan Sheet" June 7, 1999, p. 7)
