Executive Summary

FDA is providing an additional $2 mil. annually to fund the Joint Institute for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition, a 25% increase over the program's existing budget, the agency announces in the July 26 Federal Register. JIFSAN was formed in April 1996 as a collaborative research effort between the agency's Center for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition and Center for Veterinary Medicine and the University of Maryland. The original funding still has three years of support left; the new backing will commence by the end of the fiscal year, Sept. 30. While the main focus of JIFSAN has been food safety and nutrition research and risk assessment, the program also deals with other agency interests, such as dietary supplements, cosmetics and food labeling
