Executive Summary
Eighty-six percent of dental hygienists surveyed would recommend the baking soda-containing gum to their patients as a supplement to brushing and flossing, according to survey announced Dec. 17 by Church & Dwight, the makers of the baking soda chewing gum. The survey was conducted among 250 members of the American Association of Dental Hygienists. After four weeks of use, "74% intend to keep on chewing...85% will recommend it to their own family members," and 35% agreed the product "was more beneficial than just chewing ordinary sugar-free gum." The company also cites "recent studies" showing its gum reduces plaque by up to 31.9% from baseline after four weeks when combined with professional and home dental care. Dental Care gum was launched in February ("The Tan Sheet" Feb. 16, p. 22). It is joined in the marketplace by Warner-Lambert's competing Trident Advantage with baking soda, launching now ("The Tan Sheet" Dec. 14, p. 17)
