Executive Summary

Company proposes revised labeling and new scientific information to FDA in Nov. 5 meeting. McNeil says it plans "further discussions with the FDA as soon as possible" so the two parties may work out their differences. FDA registered its displeasure with McNeil Consumer Health's plans to market the cholesterol-lowering margarine product as a dietary supplement in an Oct. 28 letter, saying statements on the label cause the product to be considered a food for regulatory purposes. McNeil's test market and national launch of the product are on hold pending the outcome of the discussions; the company initially indicated its intent to forge ahead with marketing plans ("The Tan Sheet" Nov. 2, pp. 3-4)
