5-HTP supplements under review by FDA following Mayo findings of impurities.

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

5-HTP-CONTAINING DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS UNDER REVIEW BY FDA in response to a Mayo Clinic study that found impurities in six different marketed samples of the supplement ingredient, the agency says in an Aug. 31 "Talk Paper." FDA analysis of several products confirmed that 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan, a supplement marketed for relief of insomnia, headaches, obesity and depression, may contain potentially harmful contamination. A team of Mayo investigators, led by Gerald Gleich, MD, and Stephen Naylor, PhD, reported the same findings in a letter to the editor published in the September issue of Nature Medicine.
