Executive Summary

Botanical has been nominated by the National Cancer Institute for toxicity testing but a decision on whether testing is needed has been deferred pending evaluation of carcinogenicity studies being performed by industry, the National Toxicology Program announces in the May 28 Federal Register. NTP has been informed that Lichtwer Pharma is conducting rodent safety studies on St. John's wort and results will be forwarded to NCI in approximately one year. The National Institutes of Health also is sponsoring research on St. John's wort as a treatment for depression through a grant to Duke University (The Tan Sheet" Oct. 6, 1997, p. 18)...
