Recorded in food, drug and mass merchandise outlets for the 52 weeks ended Dec. 28, sales for the herb were boosted by positive news coverage of its mental performance benefits. A study published in the Oct. 22 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association found that ginkgo biloba improved mental functioning in individuals with Alzheimer's disease and multi-infarct dementia ("The Tan Sheet" Oct. 27, 1997, p. 16).
