LIPOIC ACID AN "ANTIOXIDANT PAR EXCELLENCE," FNB PANEL TOLD by Lester Packer, PhD, University of California at Berkeley, at a workshop on anti-oxidants held at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. March 4. The Food & Nutrition Board's Panel on Dietary Antioxidants held the workshop to gather information related to the development of revised Daily Reference Intake values for antioxidants. Data on lipoic acid, which is found in spinach, as well as data on other plant-based substances such as lycopene and polyphenols, were presented to the committee in addition to information on nutrients widely recognized as antioxidants, such as vitamins E, C and beta carotene ("The Tan Sheet" March 2, p. 18). FNB is part of NAS.
