Botanical extract definitions to clarify labeling declarations proposed by ExtractsPlus.

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

BOTANICAL EXTRACT DEFINITIONS TO CLARIFY LABELING DECLARATIONS PROPOSED by Carlsbad, Calif.-based ExtractsPlus in a Dec. 24 citizen petition filed with FDA. The petition seeks revisions to the agency's Sept. 23 final rule covering the labeling of liquid and dry herbal extract products. ExtractsPlus says it believes "it is the absence of definitions for the processing terms, as well as other labeling terms, in the regulations that create the greatest potential for consumer confusion and for perhaps unintentionally misleading statements on both consumer and bulk extract labels." The company proposes a series of definitions that could be added to the regulations.
