Plantain manufacturers, distributors, importers receive FDA warning letters.

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

FDA WARNING LETTERS ON PLANTAIN CONTAMINATION to manufacturers, distributors and importers of digitalis-contaminated plantain request specific information to assure that adulteration and distribution of the bulk source ingredient will not reoccur. The contamination incident was revealed through an agency investigation following two serious cardiac-related adverse events earlier this year involving Shasta, Calif.-based Arise & Shine's plantain-containing herbal tea Chomper ("The Tan Sheet" May 26, p. 23). In at least eight warning letters issued to various sectors of the herbal industry, FDA acknowledges the completion of the contaminated products' recall but stresses the agency is "concerned that this does not happen again."
