FTC dietary supplement outreach: Division of Advertising Practices will determine whether to make a recommendation to the commissioners by year-end whether the supplements industry needs more guidance and what form that guidance should take, DAP Senior Staff Attorney Michelle Rusk says at a Sept. 29 seminar on supplements in Washington, D.C. There are three possibilities for the guidance, Rusk says: a formal policy statement, as was done with food advertising; more informal guidelines, including specific examples about claims that could get a company into trouble and those that could be crafted safely; or something even less formal, such as a brochure for industry education or articles in the trade press. In its outreach effort, FTC has had about a dozen meetings during the last four months with industry groups and trade associations to discuss its treatment of dietary supplement claims (The Tan Sheet" Sept. 22, p. 12)...
