Executive Summary
IoM Dietary Reference Intakes: Sept. 23 workshop sponsored by the Institute of Medicine Food & Nutrition Board will address newly established DRIs for calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D and fluoride ("The Tan Sheet" Aug. 18, pp. 14-16). Vernon Young, PhD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, chair of the Standing Committee on the Scientific Evaluation of Dietary Reference Intakes, will provide an overview of DRIs, and the chairs of both the Panel on Calcium and Related Nutrients and the Subcommittee on Upper Reference Levels of Nutrients will speak. A panel of federal agency reps will address the impact of DRIs on nutrition and health policy. In addition, panelists will discuss what Americans eat with respect to these nutrients and questions that consumers and health professionals have about the nutrients and the DRI process. The all-day meeting will be held in the auditorium at the National Academy of Sciences, 2101 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C., beginning at 8:30 a.m....
