Federal Trade Commission: Commissioner Christine Varney will step down in August to pursue a private-sector career at the D.C. firm Hogan & Hartson. Varney, whose term technically expired in September 1996, joined the FTC in October 1994. Her departure will leave FTC with four commissioners until a nominated successor is confirmed. In February, President Clinton named Sheila Anthony to succeed Commissioner Janet Steiger, but confirmation hearings have been stalled in Congress. Steiger has not indicated whether she plans to leave the commission before her successor is confirmed...
