GNC ginseng recall: General Nutrition Companies conducts national recall of its Ginseng Gold Panax Ginseng Extract. Initiated earlier in July, the recall was prompted by New York state concerns that liquid ginseng extracts contain a "high percentage" of undeclared alcohol. Announcing July 10 a general recall of over 75 liquid ginseng products, the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets warns the products are "mislabeled" and will be seized if not voluntarily removed. The department maintains the products contain up to 24% alcohol and are packaged "in such a way as to appeal to children as an alcoholic beverage." The products typically are available in glass vials containing 9.5-10 mL of liquid. A New York state lab analysis found that Ginseng Gold contained 15.7% alcohol. GNC said it will sponsor a third-party analysis of its product and thereafter will consider relabeling or reformulation.
