Bayer recalls/discontinues Phillips' Gelcaps in response to FDA phenolphthalein concerns.

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

BAYER RECALLS PHILLIPS' GELCAPS FROM SHELVES NATIONWIDE and ceases production and shipping of the phenolphthalein-containing OTC laxative. "The action is being taken in response to recent concerns expressed...by [FDA] regarding phenolphthalein and cancer in laboratory animals," the company announced June 2. In an April 30 review of data on phenolphthalein's link to cancer in transgenic mice, 15 of 17 members of FDA's Carcinogenicity Assessment Committee voted "yes" to the question of whether existing data show a "relevant carcinogenic risk for humans" ("The Tan Sheet" May 26, p. 12).
