Executive Summary

Codex: Nutrition and foods committee discusses proposal to use a "direct safety approach" for setting vitamin and mineral upper limits during the group's Oct. 7-11 meeting in Bonn, Germany, the Council for Responsible Nutrition stated in an Oct. 22 release. The new proposal, as well as two other options under discussion -- setting upper nutrient limits based on a percentage of RDA intakes or on "physiological" levels -- will next be reviewed by the full Codex Alimentarius Commission in June 1997. CRN President John Cordaro noted: "The agreement to consider the direct safety approach is significant progress for our efforts and will benefit consumers and industry worldwide"...
