Welfare reform bill food stamp study: The Council for Responsible Nutrition issues an Aug. 23 release on the President's signing of welfare reform legislation providing for a U.S. Department of Agriculture study on the use of food stamps to buy vitamin and mineral supplements ("The Tan Sheet" Aug. 12, In Brief). CRN notes that it originally had hoped for a law reversing the ban on buying supplements with food coupons but that the study "represents a compromise among congressional leaders who felt that the issue needs more consideration and investigation." The amendment was proposed by Rep. Gary Condit (D-Calif.), apparently in response to the late Rep. Bill Emerson's (R-Missouri) push to allow the use of food stamps for supplement purchases...
