Nicotine patch patent litigation: Habitrol marketer Ciba-Geigy agrees to pay settlement fee and ongoing royalties on patch sales to settle patent infringement litigation with Hoechst Marion Roussel and Alza, HMR announces June 20. Alza developed and manufactures the Nicoderm patch, HMR currently markets the Rx product, and SmithKline Beecham will market the OTC version, which awaits FDA approval. Ciba filed suit against Alza and HMR (then Marion Merrell Dow) in 1991, declaring that "manufacture, use or sale" of Nicoderm infringed patent rights exclusively licensed to Ciba. Alza and HMR filed a countersuit in January 1995 claiming that Habitrol infringed two Alza patents...
