SODIUM BICARBONATE, SANGUINARIA, SDS PUT IN CATEGORY III FOR EFFICACY by FDA's OTC Plaque Subcommittee at its June 6-7 meeting in Gaithersburg, Md. In separate votes for each ingredient, the subcommittee unanimously agreed that there are insufficient data to prove that sodium bicarbonate (up to 5 g per dose), sanguinaria (750 mcg/g in dentifrices, 300 mcg/ml in oral rinses) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (up to 1% in mouthrinses) are effective for reducing and/or preventing plaque and gingivitis.
