Executive Summary

Phenolphthalein: Possible carcinogenicity to be discussed at a meeting of the Center for Drug Evaluation & Research's Carcinogenicity Assessment Committee slated for late March or early April. Studies on the OTC laxative ingredient's potential carcinogenicity, which are being conducted by the National Toxicology Program, the National Center for Toxicological Research, Sandoz (marketer of Ex-Lax) and Schering-Plough (marketer of Correctol), are scheduled to be completed this month. A report by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences' National Toxicology Program linking phenolphthalein to carcinogenicity in animal studies was the subject of a Dec. 18 OTC drug "feedback" meeting ("The Tan Sheet" Jan. 1, p. 10)...
