Calcium intake by women dieters: "Most women need to increase their calcium intake irrespective of dietary energy and fat intakes," researchers from the University of Otago, New Zealand, reported. Jane Upritchard et al. assessed the calcium intake of 247 women from Otago aged 50-65 consuming a variety of diets. The researchers noted similar calcium intake among women consuming a lipid-lowering or weight-reducing diet and nondieters, but observed that the mean calcium intake of 80% of the women was below the recommended level of 1000 mg.
