In Brief: Dietary Guidelines

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

Dietary Guidelines: Council for Responsible Nutrition proposes three changes to the recently released 1995 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee report in a Sept. 7 position paper. Instead of describing dietary supplements as "rarely needed," CRN suggests the guidelines state: "Daily vitamin and mineral supplements may be beneficial, especially for those who fail to eat the variety of foods recommended in the Food Guide Pyramid." CRN also suggests that the report's discussion of vitamin use at or below RDAs include the statement: "most of these nutrients are safe within a relatively broad range of intakes." In addition, CRN urges that a statement recommending calcium supplements "to build strong bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis" be added to the report, which was sent to HHS and USDA to be used in revising the 1990 "Dietary Guidelines for Americans" ("The Tan Sheet" Aug. 28, p. 12)...
