HHS DIETARY GUIDELINES REPORT DESCRIBES SUPPLEMENTS AS "RARELY NEEDED" by people who eat a variety of foods. The report developed by HHS' Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee states that daily "vitamin and mineral supplements at or below the Recommended Dietary Allowances are considered safe, but are rarely needed by people who eat a variety of foods as recommended in the Food Guide Pyramid." The report has been submitted to HHS and Agriculture for use in revising the 1990 edition of the "Dietary Guidelines for Americans."
