Quinine: Malcolm Hing, MD, a professor of medicine at the University of Ottawa, Canada, submits a July 27 letter to FDA along with a study that "demonstrates quinine is effective against night-time leg cramps." FDA deemed quinine not safe and effective for that purpose in an August 1994 rule ("The Tan Sheet" Aug. 22, 1994, p. 8). Hing authored a meta-analysis of six randomized, double-blind, crossover trials that was published in the Jan. 7 issue of the British Medical Journal that showed quinine can "prevent nocturnal leg cramps in general ambulatory populations"...
