Executive Summary
Benzoyl Peroxide: NDMA study group on the ingredient is ready to begin its 12-month photocarcinogenicity study once the group hears from FDA regarding the selected doses and other aspects of the study, NDMA told the agency in a June 15 letter. A recently completed eight-week, range-finding study in albino hairless mice determined that benzoyl peroxide in carbopol gel should be tested at 1, 10 and 50 mg/ml doses. Argus Research Labs in Horsham, Penn. conducted the range-finding study and is contracted to do the 12-month study. FDA proposed Feb. 17 that topically applied acne treatment products containing benzoyl peroxide bear warnings to avoid "unnecessary sun exposure" and directions to apply the acne medicine and sunscreen together ("The Tan Sheet" Feb. 20, p. 6)....
