Acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin and prescription NSAIDs, are "reasonably safe" and "acceptable" medications for short-term treatment of back pain, the guidelines conclude. The guidelines on treatment of acute low back pain in adults were released by AHCPR at a Dec. 8 press conference in Washington, D.C.
