FTC RELIANCE ON STATE ATTORNEYS GENERAL TO ASSIST WITH ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS

Executive Summary
FTC RELIANCE ON STATE ATTORNEYS GENERAL TO ASSIST WITH ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS should be encouraged "in light of budget constraints" at the Federal Trade Commission, Center for Science in the Public Interest Legal Affairs Director Bruce Silverglade recommended in an Oct. 27 letter to FTC. CSPI urged the commission to "develop a national strategic enforcement plan to coordinate its efforts with those of state and local officials." Silverglade's letter came in response to an FTC call for comments published in the Sept. 27 Federal Register on areas where federal enforcement is necessary and areas that might "more effectively be enforced at the state and local level." FTC expects to review comments submitted on the notice in preparation for issuing a report to Congress on the issue of FTC-state cooperation. Mandated by the FTC reauthorization act, which was signed into law earlier this year ("The Tan Sheet" Aug. 29, In Brief), the report is due by Feb. 27.
