Former Chairman Gifford Upjohn died Dec. 20 at the age of 89. A grandson of company founder Henry Uriah Upjohn, he served as chairman from 1962 until his retirement in 1969; he remained on the board of directors until 1978. Upjohn also served as president of the National Vitamin Foundation from 1948 to 1952
