VITAMIN/MINERAL GRAS STATUS URGED BY CRN in Dec. 15 comments to FDA on the agency's June 18 advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) on dietary supplements. The Council for Responsible Nutrition argued that "FDA should extend generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status to all vitamins and minerals that are recognized to be essential" in human nutrition. "Incredibly," CRN said, "FDA has taken the position that...the GRAS review applies only to nutrients added to conventional foods and not the use of these same nutrients in dietary supplements."
