Executive Summary

Treatment with oral antioxidant vitamins and minerals "may slow" the progression of age-related maculopathy (ARM), Sieglinde Freed, University of Colorado, et. al concluded in a Nov. 14 poster session at the American Academy of Ophthalmology's annual meeting in Chicago. Freed, et al. recorded focal electroretinogram (FERG) results from 92 eyes of ARM patients taking antioxidants, 46 eyes of ARM patients not receiving antioxidants and 42 control eyes. After three years, FERG function was "equal to or better than baseline" in 68.3% of eyes of ARM patients who took antioxidants, in 32.4% of ARM patients who did not take antioxidants and in 93.6% of the eyes in the control group.
