Executive Summary
World Health Organization suggests in a March 5 release that an "immediate and cost-effective" way to assure that pregnant women do not suffer from anemia is "to give all pregnant and lactating women oral iron supplements." Research is under way, WHO says, to "identify effective ways of so doing and to overcome problems of unpleasant side effects which iron tablets may cause." WHO says it is working with "international partners" to support such research. WHO's comments were in response to a recent WHO report that revealed that anemia is one of the most widespread and most neglected nutritional deficiency diseases worldwide, particularly among pregnant women.
