IoM Medication Errors Committee Convenes July 6-8

Regulatory, legislative and industry perspectives on medication errors will be presented at the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Identifying & Preventing Medication Errors meeting July 6-8 in Washington, D.C. FDA panelists include Office of New Drugs Director John Jenkins, Medication Errors Division Director Carol Holquist, and Office of Pharmacoepidemiology & Statistical Science Director Paul Seligman. Additional FDA speakers are Office of Pediatric Therapeutics Director Dianne Murphy and Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising & Communications Director Tom Abrams. The IoM committee is directed by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 to investigate medication errors and recommend programs for prevention. The group is slated to issue final recommendations by Jan. 1, 2007. The upcoming meeting marks the group's third session. An industry panel comprises Johnson & Johnson Clinical Affairs VP Mike Kafrissen, Cardinal Health/Alaris Center for Medication Safety & Clinical Improvement Clinical Director Tim Vanderveen, Thomson Micromedex Chief Clinical Informatics Officer Jerry Osheroff and Healthvision Chief Medical Officer/Senior VP Jonathan Teich. The industry panelists represent the perspectives of the pharmaceutical industry, medical device industry, pharmacy databases and e-prescribing technology, respectively. An additional stakeholder panel features Express Scripts Chief Medical Officer Ed Weisbart, who will represent pharmacy benefit managers. Senate Finance Committee Majority Staff Health Policy Director Mark Hayes and Minority Staff member David Schwartz will discuss drug safety and medication management initiatives. Senate Health Committee Majority Health Policy Advisor Stephen Northrup and Minority Staff Director David Bowen will discuss patient safety, quality improvement and heath information technology initiatives.
