AARP will re-launch its "wise use" drug campaign in 2006 by providing price and effectiveness comparisons for prescription, generic and over-the-counter drugs within the same class. "In our new 'wise use' campaign we're going to give consumers and health professionals additional information that describes the comparative effectiveness and the price of different medications - brand, generic and over-the-counter - that can be used to treat a condition," AARP CEO Bill Novelli said. Novelli spoke at the World Congress Leadership Summit on Disease Management & Chronic Care April 5 in Arlington, Va. "We're going to roll this campaign out starting next year and build on our efforts to put a spotlight on prescription drug prices and inflation trends." "We initiated the campaign in 2003 to urge our members and the public to talk to their doctors about their prescriptions... and to ask their doctors if generic drugs are available," Novelli said. The campaign featured television and magazine advertisements advising consumers to compare drug prices and consider generic therapies. "We're planning to restart this campaign and crank it up a notch." The campaign will complement the group's recently launched drug comparison website, which includes comparisons of effectiveness, safety and cost for nine classes of drugs. The site will eventually have information on 20 classes of drugs (1 (Also see "AARP Drug Website Includes Effectiveness, Safety And Cost Comparisons" - Pink Sheet, 24 Feb, 2005.)). - Andrew Shelton |
